Would you know how to use your “Pages Directory”?

Have you noticed how thin your Yellow Pages and Thompson Directories are getting? Would you remember how to use it? Would it be as useful now as using Google (other search engine directories are available…)?

The truth is we love Google. And with Valentine’s Day around the corner more and more of the public turn to search engines to find local florists, gift shops and chocolatiers! They simply type what they want and the area that they live in and hey presto, they are offered a plethora of local businesses and links to their websites. Simple.

I could present you with a huge bundle of statistics showing how many more people use Google than “hard” directories, but I won’t bore you. Trust me, it’s many, many more.

So what have you done to advertise your business? Do you have a website? Do you realise how easy and affordable it is? We surprise small businesses every week with our costs and the services we provide to make an internet presence an affordable and inexpensive reality.

Two of our largest customers recently withdrew all of their directory advertising. We didn’t ask them to, or suggest that it would be a good idea. They just decided that they were getting more business through the websites we designed for them, than they did in years of directory advertising. It’s not for everyone to be so bold, but it is worth doing the sums.

So… If you haven’t already taken the internet plunge, or if you have and you’re website doesn’t quite come up to scratch (and there are many like that), then call us. We speak your language, prices start at only £99 and we have great ideas to help you advertise your business.

See you soon!

We can now manually submit your business to 100 online directories for only £75. Each submission is manually placed meaning we will specify the most informative and relevant information to each directory. The directories themselves are free, and whilst they are not necessarily “local” or trade related they provide backlinks to your website, and that is invaluable for Google page rankings.

Microsoft sues Comet over ‘counterfeit’ Windows recovery disks

Microsoft has alleged that Comet created and sold 94,000 counterfeit Windows recovery CDs for XP and Vista.

The CDs, which allow users to reinstall software they have legitimately purchased with a computer, were sold by Comet so that users did not have to create their own, sources at the company said.

In a statement Microsft conceded that “the alleged counterfeits were sold to customers who had purchased Windows-loaded PCs and laptops”. Prior to 2007, most manufacturers included recovery disks, but the practice ceased in 2008 as they encouraged purchasers to make their own. Comet sources say they believe they acted in the best interests of the consumer by producing bespoke recovery disks for each computer model.

David Finn, associate general counsel for Worldwide Anti-Piracy and Anti-Counterfeiting at Microsoft said that “Comet produced and sold thousands of counterfeit Windows CDs to unsuspecting customers in the United Kingdom. Comet’s actions were unfair to customers. We expect better from retailers of Microsoft products — and our customers deserve better, too.”

The suit alleges that Comet produced the counterfeits in a factory in Hampshire and then sold them to customers from its retail outlets across the UK.

Recovery disks allow users to restore their computers if there are problems with updates or new programmes, and have become increasingly important as people rely on information technology. At the time of the alleged offence, the problem was more severe as fewer people stored their files and media online.

The case comes at a bad time for Comet, which has been one of the worst hit retailers on the high street, and is expected to have suffered from poor Christmas trading. Its parent company KESA is in the process of selling the chain in a bid to lower its debt and stem its losses.

The retailer said that it was confident that it had not infringed any copyright from the discs. It is understood that the discs generated less than £1m in turnover for the company.

In a statement it said: “We note that proceedings have been issued by Microsoft Corporation against Comet relating to the creation of recovery discs by Comet on behalf of its customers. Comet has sought and received legal advice from leading counsel to support its view that the production of recovery discs did not infringe Microsoft’s intellectual property.

“Comet firmly believes that it acted in the very best interests of its customers. It believes its customers had been adversely affected by the decision to stop supplying recovery discs with each new Microsoft Operating System based computer. Accordingly Comet is satisfied that it has a good defence to the claim and will defend its position vigorously.”

Microsoft said that customers who were concerned about the legitimacy of software should visit howtotell.com.

Aside from Beeches Locks (pictured) I’ve completed a site for a will writers, another locksmith, a financial company and a private project that you’ll have to wait to hear about.

We’ve installed SEO on all of the sites and have spent the vast majority of our time adding keywords, phrases, metatags and the usual suspects. I think I might need to look at our SEO pricing soon!

We have a few interesting projects on the horizon for next week including a fitness trainer and a playground manufacturer. Should be a tad different…

Time for me to log off. Until tomorrow…

Why would I need a website?

Well you get people coming through the door, you’re a business situated in a busy parade. Why spend money on a website?
A survey by PayPal showed an average 37% increase in turnover amongst small businesses that had websites. The same survey showed that 25% of small businesses without websites had no idea what the set-up costs were. About the same percentage thought they might be upwards of £500. Well now you can get your business on-line from only £149…

Many potential customers rely on search engines to find local businesses. They will search for the type of the business they require and may even decide which business to choose from on-line reviews!

A potential customer living in Belmont Village, for example, might type “pet shop Carshalton” into Google, looking for a pet shop in that area. What chance of selling your company without a website for them to find?

Are there real benefits in having a website?

In a word, “yes”.

You will undoubtably reach more potential customers by having a website. Various surveys agree that about 70% of the public use the internet when searching for a business. And 9/10 of those will choose a company to call from the first three pages of a search engine’s results.

What would your website offer them?

A website is open 24 hours a day for browsing

To start with a client can obtain information on your products, services and location 24 hours a day. Your business doesn’t need to be open for a potential customer to look through your offerings on a website. Most internet browsing is done in the evenings.

The public and other businesses could potentially buy from you at any hour

With an e-commerce site you could potentially sell your products on-line at any time of the day. It’s not for everyone but it makes sense if you can service on-line orders.

A professional image

With more and more businesses utilising an on-line presence there is a danger that you will look outdated by not having an internet site. With our contact pages only costing £99 for two years why should you miss out? Your website is your shop window on the internet, a poor looking website can sometimes be more damaging than having no website at all. Our designers specialise in providing professional looking websites at very affordable prices.

They can contact you directly

Either by offering an email address on your website, or a contact form, your customers have an opportunity to send you a message or request at a time that suits them.

Latest offers and updates

Your website can be used to promote your business dynamically. Let the public know about your special promotions, seasonal offerings or latest products. Use your website in the same way as you would your shop window!

I already have a website, albeit a bit dated?

As mentioned previously your website is your shop window. If your site is poorly designed or looks dated then you are more likely to turn potential customers away from your business. Call us today and we’ll discuss your options and let you know exactly how affordable our services are!
